Eviosys is promoting its Ecopeel range of three-piece cans in Europe after trials demonstrated that the format reduced material use, accelerated the filling process, and cut carbon emissions generated in their manufacture.
With Ecopeel, the standard easy-open steel end is replaced with an aluminium peelable foil. A flared lip at the top of the tinplate can enables the foil to be bonded directly to the body. The design removes the need for a steel ring with a traditional double seam and provides a full-aperture opening.
The Swiss-based canmaker said Ecopeel produces a lighter can with a filling speed five times faster than traditional versions. Carbon emission reductions of 20% are said to be possible in the manufacturing process.
The full-aperture opening also means the contents can be released without any of the product being caught and wasted in the rim. Cans are shipped with the customisable foil attached so brands may simply fill and seam them from the bottom using standard seaming equipment.
“With the product already proving revolutionary in the Spanish and Italian fish markets, we are now looking forward to enhancing the rollout of the product and expanding the range to other markets within the food industry,” said chief executive of Eviosys Tomás López.
Spanish brand Jealsa said it had decided to use the cans based on their environmental credentials.
“It is very important to us to work with partners who can offer us new ways to adopt more sustainable choices throughout our supply chain – including our packaging,” said chief executive of Jealsa Jesús Alonso. “Ecopeel sets a new standard for inclusive, accessible, sustainable and innovative food packaging, and allows consumers to enjoy our high-quality products with ease.”
Eviosys said it is promoting Ecopeel across Europe, particularly in the pâté, olive, and pet food sectors. It said it hopes the cans will persuade more brands to adopt metal packaging to help them meet sustainability targets related to resource use, recyclability and waste.
