Greek olive oil producer Neolea has launched its premium extra virgin olive oil in an aluminium D&I can with a reusable ‘fresh cap’.

Talking to The Canmaker, chief executive of Neolea Daan Tolk said that aluminium’s infinite recyclability made it Neolea’s “preferred material for reducing environmental impact in product packaging, providing both economic and ecological advantages”. 

Tolk wouldn’t reveal the source of the cans, but they appear to be adapted D&I beverage cans with a special internal coating to suit olive oil.

To provide internal pressure, nitrogen is injected into the cans during the canning process, which has had adjustments “so we can gently take care of the cans, add the nitrogen and seal with an end cap”.

The company developed the ‘fresh cap’ seal, details of which are not being made available. However, Tolk said the fresh cap was developed to “ensure the perfect pour and maintain the impeccable freshness of our olive oil. We’re looking forward to launching a healthier solution for our environment, customers, and suppliers”.

The Corfu-based company will be exporting the oil in the 16oz (473ml) cans to US stores in late 2024. Neolea won Gold in the 2024 New York International Olive Oil Competition for its oil with “low acidity, freshness, and the full-bodied taste of olives with a light, peppery finish”.
